January

17          Intro to Eng 1A and Global Politics. Which global issue concerns you most right now: A) Human Rights?  B) Money/Jobs? C) Security/Violence?  D) The Environment? 

22          Review active/critical reading. Discuss Plato’s “Allegory.”

24          Continue with Plato, and applications to today. Review quoting and paraphrasing.

29          Discuss “One World, Rival Theories” (PS 30 handout). What “shadows” might we be tracking when we read the international news? How are IR theories also “shadows”?

31          Intro to NGO approaches to making the world better. Presentation groups on NGOs assigned. Library Orientation. Essay #1 assigned.

 

February

5            Discuss “NGOs:  Sins of the Secular Missionaries.” Presentations begin.

7            Presentations continued. Pre-writing for essay #1. Analyze an NGO:  what can it achieve? What hidden costs might there be for citizens or a state?

12          Class work on essay #1 as needed.

14          Peer review workshop on essay #1

19          President’s Day Holiday. No class.

21          Essay #1 due.  Begin politics of conflict and identity. Watch Hotel Rwanda. How can identity related to class, gender, nationality or religion lead to conflict? How is such identity powerful?

26          Discuss Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant” (handout)

28          Discuss “Final Cut” and/or “The Clash of Civilizations?”

 

March

5            Discuss “Loves Microsoft, Hates America” and “Women, the State, and War.” Review topics for essay #2.

7            Continue with essay #2.

12          Peer review workshop on essay #2 Begin Travels of a T-Shirt. How does a global marketplace affect all of us? Our jobs? Our culture? Our natural resources?

14          Continue Travels of a T-Shirt.

19          Essay #2 due. Continue Travels of a T-Shirt.

21          Continue Travels of a T-Shirt.

26          Continue Travels of a T-Shirt.

28          Conclude Travels of a T-Shirt. Review topics for midterm.

 

April

2            Midterm exam (in-class essay on Travels of a T-Shirt).

4            Essay #3 assigned. What are the costs and benefits of TNCs such as Gap, Levis, Nike, Adidas for workers and consumers across the globe?  Begin brainstorming lines of inquiry and key words.

9-13      Spring Break

16          Essay #3 prospectus and annotated list of sources due. Discuss “Dueling
Globalizations.”

18          Library research day/ conferences on research papers.

23          Discuss “Deep in the Republic of Chevron.”
