Science Lab Information for Spring, 2004

By successfully completing the final two semesters of the 2003-2004 ISLS program, you will fulfill the GE transferable science lecture requirements for UC or CSU, receiving credit for Anthropology 1 (in Autumn, 2003) and Astronomy 10 (in Spring, 2004).  In addition, you may complete a one-unit lab this Spring 2004 that fulfills the science lab requirement for transfer.   This term we’ll offer one section of the Anthropology 1L and one section of Astronomy 30 labs, strictly for ISLS students:

Anthro 1L Lab: Monday afternoons 2:30-5:20 PM; from 26 January - 27 May, Room 502 with Susan Sperling and Mirielle Giovanola
Required Text: Park Biological Anthropology Reader

Astro 30 Lab: Thursday nights, 6:30 – 9:20 PM; from 22 January - 20 May, Room 1714 with Scott Hildreth
Required Text: Practical Astronomy Labs

Enrollment in these sections must be limited to 25 students.  Students who are interested in either lab section must confirm their attendance this week, AND attend the first lab meetings (Anthro 1L: Monday, 26 Jan; Astro 30: Thursday, 22 Jan)!  If you cannot or decide not to attend after signing up, please let us know immediately, so that someone on the wait list can attend!

Q&A

Are the labs required?: No. But to transfer, you'll need to take a science lab at some point; taking one now with other ISLS students and faculty will most likely prove to be the easiest, and most enjoyable option.

What if you cannot take either lab this term?: You do have other options to fulfill the science lab requirement for transfer.  You may be able to take another section of Anthropology 1L lab, or Astronomy 30 Lab this term, although those would be with other faculty and students outside of the ISLS program). We can work out transfer of credit and grades with the other faculty; if this option is what you need, or want, please contact Susan or Scott to discuss your situation! Or, if you will be staying at Chabot for 2004-2005, you can take another science class with a lab.

How often do the Labs Meet?: Classes will meet one session per week.

Can you take BOTH labs?: Possibly, depending upon enrollment. Our first priority will be to ensure that every ISLS student who wants to take one lab is able to do so. If there are open slots in the labs after everyone has had a chance to sign up, you may be able to take the other lab. Note that we'll have to work out a special arrangement for you to receive credit for the second lab section, as officially the ISLS curriculum only includes one lab.

What if more than 25 people want to take one of the labs? We'll implement a process for selecting students in priority order for the labs: first, the students who have been with our current program from the start (ISLS 1A and 1B); second, adding students who were in ISLS 1B last Autumn, and third, students new to ISLS this term. If the lab section fills at any point in this process and others in the same classification still want to enroll, we'll use standard Chabot priority for adding based on your student priority number.
