NEW BUSINESS SKILLS COURSES

Chabot’s Business Division is now offering a series of 1-unit courses intended to provide you with the skills needed to secure a job, or to enhance your employability or potential for promotion. These short courses are focused on specific job-hunting skills, on developing a plan to start your own business, on improving your professionalism and your ability to supervise others. These 6-week courses will help you to build the skills you want quickly! All courses are online, and designed to fit your busy schedules. See the class schedule for specific dates for each course.

Course Descriptions
BUS-50A: Skills for Supervisors: Survival skills for new supervisors and those who aspire to move to managerial positions. Necessary skills of time management, leadership, planning, motivation, conducting meetings, communication, handling stress, conflict, and performance appraisals will be discussed. 1 unit.
BUS-50B: Business Etiquette & Professionalism: Principles of American and international business etiquette for the business professional: introductions, conversational techniques, professional appearance, entertainment, telephone and computer etiquette, and more. 1 unit.
BUS-50C: Interviewing for Success: Principles and techniques of successful employment interviews: interview preparation, selling your qualifications, managing difficult qualifications, following up on the interview. 1 unit.
BUS-50D: Resumes and Job Application Letters: Research and preparation of persuasive employment search documents, including company research, self-assessment, document composition and format. Includes resumes, job application letters, and follow up communications. 1 unit.
BUS-50E: Business Email: Communication and technology principles for effective use of email in a business environment, including email test and subject line composition and editing, email technology and tools, inbox management, email etiquette, email as a job search tool, and email security. 1 unit.
BUS-50F: Developing a Business Plan: Research, analysis and outlining of logical and persuasive business plans, including market and competitive analysis, financial plans, management and operational plans, and plan outlines and executive summaries. 1 unit. BUS-50G: Negotiating Skills: Negotiation theory and skills development for business negotiations. Negotiating goals, strategies, key skills, and styles. 1 unit.
BUS-50H: Practical Business Ethics: Examination of real-world ethical issues in the business environment. Includes exploration of personal ethics, review of contemporary business ethics issues, and development of approaches to resolving ethical dilemmas. 1 unit.
BUS-50J: Time Management Skills: Practical tips and tools to manage time in academic and business-related situations. Setting short-term and long-term goals. Prioritization of goals and activities. Developing plans; organizing your workplace. Typical time wasters/time leaks, including procrastination, and ways of overcoming them. 1 unit.
BUS-50K: Listening Skills: Examination of listening styles and skill development for the business environment. Includes exploration of the benefits of listening, listening attitudes, and tips for improving listening. 1 hour.
BUS-50L: Careers in Business: Exploration of the wide variety of potential careers in business, and the educational preparation appropriate for those careers. 1 unit.
BUS-50M: Workplace Diversity. Tips and tools to value and manage diversity in the workplace. Overview of theoretical and legal perspectives, dimensions of diversity, the impact of diversity on the workplace. Case studies to acknowledge differences and successfully build relationships with people of diverse backgrounds. 1 hour.
