Bus 1A - Principles of Accounting with ![]() Instructor: Jas Bhangal jbhangal@chabotcollege.edu |
Welcome to Business 1A Sec 071(30063) Spring 2008 (Partially Online). I am your instructor, Jas Bhangal. Please read everything below to find out if this course is for you and how to begin.
Note:
This class is taught partially online and requires an on campus attendance every
Tuesday 4:30- 6:20pm.
Class Orientation: (One and half hour) You can attend one of the orientation sessions scheduled on campus or attend an online orientation session that offers an introduction to Bb (Blackboard), WileyPLUS, netiquette, time management and study skills that will enable you to succeed in an online course. For schedule of on campus sessions to go https://bw4.clpccd.cc.ca.us/pls/OWA_PROD/bzskflib.P_SelDefTerm
Online sessions will be offered as Online web conference at http://wiley.acrobat.com/bhangaloffice. Log into this website before hand so that you can make sure that your computer supports it (to avoid technical issues and confusion during actual orientation). This orientation is live so for actual orientation, log in about 5-10 minutes before the scheduled time.
You do not need a password and will log in as a guest with your First and Last name.
Pick any one of the above sessions. You are required to have an internet connection and telephone connection to be able to participate in this session.
How does an Online Course work?
For this course, students go online and use a Course
Management System called Blackboard, and WileyPLUS to submit
assignments, take quizzes, exams, and communicate with their instructor and
other students. There are NO on campus meetings for this class. All
assignments, tutorials, exams, and activities will be completed online and
submitted through the Blackboard and WileyPlus system.
The Blackboard system for Business 1A Sec 071 (30063) Spring 2008 (Partially Online) features all information to guide you through the course: the syllabus, class schedule, list of assignments, discussion boards, midterm exams (theory portion) and other supplementary resources. Chapter tutorials (online chapter content), assignments (problems) and midterm exams (problem portion) are located in WileyPlus. It is absolutely crucial to become familiar with the system and its components. You need to have the self-discipline to log into the online course management system at least 4-6 times a week, study your textbook, and complete all assignments required. If you do not sign in the system the required number of times, your grade will be adjusted by the instructor. The instructor can and will track both the amount of time you spend in the system and the number of times you log into the system.
Business 1A online is a transferable course and is equivalent to the on-campus sections. The online version will cover the same material as a traditional lecture course.
Is this course for me?
This course is for business majors or others who are
interested in the field of Accounting and Business and feel comfortable using
email, an internet browser, etc. Take a quick
assessment
geared for online courses. If you do not feel you have enough self-motivation
and self-discipline to take the online course, you are encouraged to take a
traditional, face-to-face version of this class.
What are the technical requirements?
You should have some experience surfing the web and sending e-mails with
attachments. It also would be helpful if you like and feel comfortable being
online. You will need reliable online access, a 56K modem speed or higher,
Windows 98 or later operating system, MS Word 97 (or later version) and
PowerPoint 98 (or later version), as well as a standard browser - Internet
Explorer (not AOL!) and an e-mail account.
You can access the course from any computer. You are responsible for arranging the use of an alternative computer (including public library and/or Chabot library lab) in case you experience technical difficulties with you home computer or internet connection. Having technical problems is not an excuse for not completing the class activities. No time extension will be given because of technical problems you may encounter.
Is there a book?
You must purchase a special shrink wrapped textbook package
for this course. The ISBN is
978-0470-18597-1. The last
digit of this number could be different. This can be purchased from the
Chabot College bookstore. You can buy the package online at
http://www.chabotbookstore.com/home.aspx
The package includes:
It is strongly recommended that you do not buy the
used book because you will still need to buy a code which alone will
cost you about $60. To buy a code online go to:
http://he-cda.wiley.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-130234.html#accounting, choose
the title for this class textbook to buy the code.
TEXTBOOK OPTION - You can choose to buy the WileyPLUS code alone that comes with an ebook. You will be able to print the chapters if you wish to (Do not forget that printing the whole book could end up being quite expensive and time consuming). If you go with this option and later want to buy the book instead, you can contact Wiley publishing online and can get the book for half price because you had bought the code earlier. A word of caution, in terms of cost and time, this could end up being a costly option in the end.
To avoid frustration and delays, you should buy the shrink wrapped package from Chabot bookstore. If you buy the used book cheaper elsewhere, you will need to buy the WileyPLUS code online which along will cost approximately $60.00. For more information on WileyPLUS, check under WileyPLUS button in Bb.

Do I have to log in at certain times?
No, but you will need to log in several times (at least 4-6) a week, at a
time convenient for you.
1. First of all, if you have never taken classes at Chabot before, you will need to apply for admissions at Chabot college. The application can be filled out online. You can also apply in person, by visiting Building 100, Admissions and Records (A&R).
2. After your application is processed (usually takes 2-5 business days from the moment your application is received at A&R), you can register for the class. This can be done either in person, on the phone (510-781-1300), or over the web.
3. Then, go to the Chabot's http://www.chabotcollege.edu/DistanceEd/ and read through the short modules to become familiar with the course management system, "Blackboard."
4. To log into the Blackboard, you will need to use a username and a password that should have been mailed to you by the college. Every student has been assigned a new ID number different from their SSN. The new User Identification Number is a unique number beginning with a W and containing 8 digits. If you forget your new ID, you may log into Class-Web with your old Student ID and click the What's my new User ID link. Your temporary password is the first two letters of your first name, followed by the first two letters of your last name (all lowercase) followed by the last four digits of your new User Identification Number.
For example: Maria Valdez with a User Identification Number of W12345678:
USERNAME: W12345678 (the W is uppercase)
PASSWORD: mava5678 (all lowercase letters + last four digits).
You will be able to change the password after logging into Blackboard for the first time.
6. When you are ready to log into Blackboard, please go to http://clpccd.blackboard.com/. This is an entry page for our class. You will type in the user name and a password. The platform will open a welcome page three menu tabs at the top. You will need to click on the "Courses" tab. Then you will see your class' title Business 1A Sec 071 (30063) Spring 2008 on that page. Click on the course's name to get to the virtual classroom. You will be automatically taken to my announcement/welcome letter. Read it and start activities in accordance with the announcement.
7. As soon as you access the course, you will need to change your e-mail address to be able to communicate with the instructor. Click Personal Information, then click Edit Personal Information. Simply enter your e-mail address, deleting the generic one that is there. You do not need to enter any other information; just click Submit at the bottom.
8. You also can change your password from the one developed for you ("mava5678" - see above). Click Personal Information, then click Change Password. Enter a unique password that you will remember in the Password and Verify Password fields. Click submit at the bottom. Click OK.
9. You are working with two software programs (Bb and WileyPLUS). To make it convenient for yourself, I recommend that you use the same log in and password for both systems.
If you have questions about Blackboard, including all technical questions, or still have difficulties logging in after reading the material, please go to http://www.chabotcollege.edu/DistanceEd/help/ and fill out a request form.

WileyPlus is an eLearning product from the authors of your textbook. You will be doing most of your course related work in WileyPlus.
