1.            Kinicki, Williams.  Management: A Practical Introduction, Customized Text, ISBN 0077214021, McGraw-Hill, 3rd edition, 2008 (or you can  purchase a full edition, ISBN 978-007-353019-2).

3.            Internet access (can be accessed from the campus)

 

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

1.      Explain the role and importance of management to society and individuals

2.      Define the functions of management and the skills required to become successful manager

3.      Contrast how managing international business is different from managing domestic business

4.      Define strategies for promoting diversity and challenges facing managers within a diverse workforce

5.      Explain various leadership theories and to describe the emerging leadership styles and issues of today

 

Attendance:

 

Ø      Students are expected to attend each class section. 

 

Ø      If you cannot attend a class due to a valid and verifiable (the instructor has a right to ask for a proof) reason, please notify the instructor prior to the class via the phone or e-mail.

 

Ø   You can earn up to 20 points for participation and attendance: 0-1 absences - 20 pts, 2-3 absences - 15 pts, 4 absences - 10 pts, 5+ absences - 0 pts. 

 

Ø      Excess absences (morning class is 4 consecutive or 6 in summary & evening class is 2 consecutive or 4 in summary) and/or continual tardiness are reasons for the instructor to drop a student from the course.

 

Ø      Students are expected to be in class 5-10 minutes before the class starts. 

 

Ø      The roll will be taken EACH class session, approximately 2-5 minutes after the class starts.  Those who are not present at the time of roll call will be considered to be absent for the full length of the class meeting.

Students who drop during the "W" period should officially drop from the class.  Please do not expect your instructor to drop you.  If you stop coming to class after the "W" period, you will receive an "F."

The instructor reserves the right to change the distribution and/or the structure of the grading process.   There might be extra credit assignments for all students present in class at the time.  Should a student be caught cheating during an examination or involved in plagiarism, an F will be assigned for the examination, paper, or assignment.

Exams:

 

We will have three exams during the course of the semester, which will include true/false, multiple choice, and short answer questions. Exams will cover all assigned chapters, any additional readings or supplementary material covered in class (videos, articles, guest speakers, etc.).  The exams are not “open book” or “ open notes.” Students for whom English is not a first language may use a dictionary during the exams.

ABSOLUTELY NO MAKEUP EXAMS ARE ALLOWED, BUT YOU MAY ARRANGE TO TAKE AN EXAM EARLIER.  The instructor will provide a review before each exam, where the key terms will be distributed to students, and key concepts will be reinforced. 

Internet Assignments *:

 

The schedule refers to six Internet assignments that will be distributed to the class in the beginning of the semester.  You are required to submit any five of these assignments.  The assignments can also be found online at  http://online.chabotcollege.edu/dkalyagin/dkalyagin/Mgmt/Internets/Index.htm.  Each assignment includes Internet address(es) of various companies and/or organizations that students will have to visit in order to complete the assignment.  Here are the guidelines for getting an A on the assignment:

 

1.       Completely answer all questions.

 

2.       To meet the college-level writing requirements, always start with an introduction (1-3 sentences) that tells the reader what you will describe.  End your report with a brief conclusion: the 1-3 sentence summary of what you described.  Always think of an outsider - a person who did not read the assignment.  If they read your paper, will they understand what was asked?

 

3.       Use specific facts/details/data.  If you state an opinion, make sure you provide justification of it.

 

4.       Follow the formatting requirements: font size 11-12, double-space, college-level writing, free of spelling and grammatical errors.

 

5.       Include your name, class number, the number of the assignment, and your professor’s name in the upper right corner.

 

6.       Reference all websites/other materials used to prepare the report.  You can list the sources at the end of your report under “Bibliography,” or reference them directly in the text of your paper.  You cannot simply copy and paste without the reference.  This is considered to be plagiarism

 

7.       I encourage you to use elements of Business writing in your work:

a.       Use short, precise sentences.

b.       Avoid complicated words, jargons, abbreviations.

c.       Use bullet points, tables, graphs when appropriate.

d.       Divide your text into paragraphs, make it reader friendly.

e.       Use titles, headings, subheadings: emphasize them in bold and/or italic

 

* Assignments must be submitted on (or before) the due date for full credit

   Assignments can be submitted in person, via e-mail, or by stopping at Building 400

   Late assignments (only within one week) will result in half credit

 

Team Assignment:

 

After the first exam, each student will be assigned in a team of 4-5 peers.  Each team is to choose a topic from the list provided below.  Each team is supposed to inform the instructor about the chosen topic by October 1, 2008.  Permission must be obtained from the instructor if you wish to use a topic not from the list.  Anyone who chooses not to participate in the team assignment will be assigned a grade "F" for the class.

 

You, as a team, should prepare a 20-30 minutes presentation of the topic in accordance with the class schedule.  A use of PowerPoint slides, overheads, or any other visual support is encouraged.  Each team is to turn in the draft of the presentation’s outline by October 27, 2008.  The final outline is to be turned to the instructor on the day of the presentation.  Everyone will be expected to participate in a discussion that will follow the presentation.  For more information, please see Some Guidelines for Team Presentation and Presentation Evaluation Form, which will be used by the instructor to grade the presentation.

 

Your presentation will include, but will not be limited to, the following points:

 

1.                  The introduction to the topic.

2.                  Past, present, and the future of the topic.

3.                  Parties that are affected by the topic.

4.                  Give specific examples of companies to illustrate the covered topic.

5.                  What lessons can modern supervisors learn from the presented issues?

8.                  How to handle stress in the workplace.

9.                  ISO 9000 and its quality standards.

10.              The changing face of unions and the manager.

11.              Romance in the workplace and its implications.

14.              Homophobia in the workplace.

15.              Workplace violence.

16.              E-mail in the workplace and its legal implications.

18.              Expatriate managers: how to deal with our managers sent abroad?

20.              Conflict in the workplace and its resolution.

21.              Change in the modern workplace and its impact on managers.

22.       The Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

Note:  Your team can use the textbook as one of the references for the topic of your choice; however, you still need to conduct additional research and to use other sources. 

 

Peer Evaluation:

 

Each student will fill out a peer evaluation form and hand it to the instructor on the night of their team presentation.  The Peer Evaluation Form will be distributed to you during the course of the class.  Based on the peer evaluations of all team members, each student will earn a maximum of 30 points.

 

Other Comments:

 

ü                  Please come on time.  Late arrivals disturb everyone else.  Attendance will be taken in 2-5 minutes after the beginning of each class.  If you are not in class at that time, you will be considered to be absent for the class session.

 

ü                  Students are to remain in class during the entire session with the exception of breaks.  Students are not allowed to come and go during class session. 

 

ü                  Please participate.  What you put into the class will determine what you get out of it – and what others get out of it.

 

ü                  If you miss a class, you are responsible for getting notes/slide printouts on the material covered from the net, a classmate, or the instructor.  If clarification of the material is necessary, please make an appointment to see the instructor.

 

ü                  My office hours are for you to use!  They are listed on page 1 of this syllabus.  Please come and see me to discuss about your progress in class, any work- or school-related problems, to ask me questions about management and business programs at Chabot, or anything else.  Don't be shy!

 

ü                  To avoid distracting noise in class, pagers must be off or in "vibration" mode, and cellular phones must be turned off or the ringing mode silenced.

 

ü                  All class participants are expected to exhibit respectful behaviors to other students and the instructor.  All students have the right and privilege to learn in the class, free from harassment and disruption.  Inappropriate or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated, nor will lewd of foul language.

 

ü                  I want this course to be a good experience for you.  But I cannot read minds and if you do not tell me what you are thinking there is little way for me to know.  If you have criticism of the course, material, or my teaching, I hope you will let me know.
