Instructor's Profile

My name is Cynthia Stubblebine, and I have been teaching at Chabot College since the Fall Quarter of 1990. I have taught most of the classes that Chabot College offers, however, my focus has been on the basic skills classes. I developed a self-paced Basic Math class that eventually has become our Basic Math with Lab class. I have offered distant education courses for Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra. I also have participated in many committees, including curriculum, assessment, hiring, peer evaluation, facilities, and book selection to name just a few. I was the Math Coordinator for two years.

Most of my schooling has been in the Bay Area. My family moved to Fremont when I was ten. I attended Norris grammar school, Centerville Junior High and Washington High School, all in Fremont. For my undergraduate work, I attended Cal State, Hayward, where I received a B.S. in Mathematics. I continued for another year at Cal State doing graduate work in Abstract Algebra. After a couple of years, I went back to school at Purdue University in Indiana and received my M.S. in Applied Mathematics with an option in Optimization.

While I was in graduate school at Cal State, I taught a variety of math classes. After my year of graduate work at Cal State, I taught at an all girls high school in San Francisco for one year. For the next five years I taught algebra, trigonometry, and calculus at Purdue University. Many of my classes were large, 75 -125 students, and I had three teaching assistants to help. My next employment was working in my husband’s business as a computer programmer and bookkeeper. After a few years of staying home with my children, I was fortunate to get a position at Chabot College.

I have enjoyed my years here at Chabot, because of the students, my colleagues, the variety of classes offered, and my enjoyment of doing mathematics. I love teaching because it is a job that is never boring. Every class is different, because the students are different. I love to learn, and there are always new thing to learn when you are teaching: new techniques, new approaches, new technology, and new mathematics.

I am a member of the following organizations:

bullet

CMC3  - California Mathematical Council, Community Colleges

bullet

AMATYC - American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges

bullet

MAA - Mathematical Association of America

bullet

NCTMC - National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

I also represent Chabot College at the IMPAC (Intersegmental Major Preparation Articulated Curriculum) meetings.

I have had the honor of receiving the Chancellors Award and the Teaching Excellence Award (from CMC3).
